So many business owners talk about having an opt in, lead magnet, or a freebie on your website or instagram page. This is used to build an email list, to build a reputation in the industry as a specialist, or to bring potential clients to you for free information or help to ultimately hope that they come back for more in a paid situation in the future.
You may have seen this as a launch day checklist, a guide to setting up your website, top 10 ways to grow your instagram following. Then you enter your email address and you are emailed a copy of this information. It is a great tool for exposure and to hit those key features we mentioned as the purpose of a freebie. There are a few problems I see though.
Problems with freebies
Freebies are often the same online. I will see an opt in or an ad and it is the same website checklist, photography poses, or something that is not that unique and I have downloaded multiple versions of the same information.
Does this individual really stand out to me? Will I come back to them in the future? Most likely no.
So, how do I make it unique?
To become unique, I want you to think about what is the thing that makes you and your business different from the other people who are also in your field. Maybe you have a certain system you have created for your workflow. I want you to think about what makes you stand out and your freebie is a chance to showcase that to an ideal client. For example, a virtual assistant has a freebie of a checklist file in Google sheets that is a project management system. This is more unique than 10 ways to use a Virtual assistant guide.
Try to think of useful, purposeful, and not something you have seen online before in the ads that come through your feed.

Remember you are not just giving away free items. You are hoping to give away something free to keep this ideal client connected to you and thinking of you as a specialist. If your freebie is like everyone else, you do not stand out. If you are unique and have a show stopping freebie, you have an edge. It does not matter the amount of followers you have, you now have a platform to speak on from this unique piece you give away to others.
Take today to walk through the questions above and brainstorm some ideas for your freebie. Think about common questions you get within your industry and even ask clothes for advice. If your freebie is intentional and unique, it will serve its purpose well for you.
