I am sure that you have heard this term before. SEO stands for “Search Engine Optimization”. SEO is important to you, as it makes your website or your products to come up higher in search engines like google, causing new organic traffic and potential leads for your business.
SEO can be used if you are an Amazon seller to allow your product to come up earlier on the search pages. You can use it on your product business website or even your service based website. No matter who you are, SEO is affecting your business and the success of your website.
Now you may be thinking, okay I understand that I need to pay attention to this, but how do I improve my SEO? Here are some great tips to start.
The good news about this is that if you are using a website platform, like Squarespace, a lot of the SEO is built into the design of your website. Many people often skip over the key areas that you need to complete though.
In this first section, you will find an SEO tab in Squarespace on each of your menu pages. You will want to complete a short description about that page and a name. When you complete the description, be sure that you use phrases that your ideal client would be searching if they needed your services.
Throughout Squarespace or your platform, you will see options to complete SEO pieces. Use this and you will have already set up so much of your SEO.
A key piece that people do not think about is images. When you google image something. The search engine knows what those photos are for a reason. You will want to make sure to place in titles on your photos. Think about items your viewer would be searching for when looking for your product and title it this. This helps your images to come up, ultimately leading people to your website. From there, if you have a high quality website, your website will sell itself. SEO helps to get new viewers there in the first place.
Here is what it looks like when you upload a photo on Squarespace. Use the title line and name your photo with purpose.
Text is key! People think it is only website and image descriptions that make a difference on your SEO. When you are writing copy for your website, headings, or even your blog posts, be sure to include phrases people will use when searching on that topic.
For example, in this blog post, I will want to include phrases and headings like:
“How do I improve my SEO?”
“Basic SEO Tips so I can get blog views”
“Getting Traffic to My Photography Website”
These headings and words being in the text are cueing to come up as a search response. Notice that I also try to include some long phrases and niched phrases. This helps me to stand out. I do not want to make a heading that many people will already be putting into their SEO. I want to stand out and be a niche. Another good tip is to add in locations like “San Diego Squarespace Designer”. This now makes me localized and become a more specific response. Think similar to how some hashtags are crowded and some make specific items come up for you that take you to exactly what you are looking for.
Finally, an easy tool to help make you searchable is Pinterest. Pinterest is a great place to look for design and DIY ideas, but it is also a great place to put your business and link to specific products, blogs, or even your lead magnet. Have you ever noticed that you will google something and a lot of Pinterest results come up? This is a great SEO tool to use that will work hard for you to get traffic to your website.
SEO is a long game. Make some time to make these small changes and watch the changes start occurring. The key thing is once you are gaining traction and people click on your link, the more your link moves up in the results pages. It is very similar to social media algorithms.
