For anyone that has asked me, “I never see colorful stuff on your portfolio and I want something fun. Can you do that for me?” this episode is for you! I’m joined by my client, Vix Meldrew on Brand Your Way to a Million for the behind-the-scenes scoop on her rebrand.
Vix is a former primary school teacher turned full-time content creator back in 2018. From there, she created digital products, course downloads, and all that good stuff. From there, she took her teaching skills and helped other content creators grow their email list and work with brands.
But ultimately, her biggest passion has always been teaching. And that teacher spirit made her super curious why some programs drew great engagement and others didn’t. She found that, often, entrepreneurs wouldn’t have a program making sales and getting people in their program. But they were having issues getting their clients’ results because of user drop off.
So in 2022, she shifted her business to help entrepreneurs gain rave results. She actually goes into the business, with all of its courses and programs, and consults on strategies to get more engagement and results! So let’s get into the “why” behind Vix’s rebrand.
Her offer is incredibly valuable and, as a former blogger, she found it quite easy and natural to communicate that with her messaging. But with written messaging on lock, she wasn’t sure how to express herself visually. She went from being uncomfortable in front of the camera during her blogging days to a few lifestyle shoots here and there for content creation for content creation.
Once she shifted to education, she introduced carousels and graphics. At first, she thought “well, this is great! I don’t need photos of myself!” And she built her Instagram around education tips and tricks in a carousel format. But when Instagram introduced Reels, this is where she really struggled struggled. Suddenly, she just felt like she couldn’t get her message across in the same way. Her carousels weren’t getting as much engagement, and she got super discouraged.
When we first started working together, I remember her telling me how bored she was of changing up her style all the time. She felt like she would find new colors, fonts, and designs, only to immediately find a new aesthetic. She would follow her original plan for a few weeks and then burn it all down, just to start all over again.
She expressed she was easily influenced by visual branding trends. She says “I’d design my own new style of templates and posts, and then I’d get the ick. Or I’d change my fonts and colors, and then I’d get the ick. And I was just like, I can’t keep doing this!” Now, this is so natural and I see it happen all the time. When people are trying to discover through own personal style, it can often be a roller coaster.
After becoming a mom for the first time and coming back to the business after two months off, 2023 was her best year in business so far. And 2024 has been even better! It really comes down to knowing that she was ready for her next level evolution.
One day, as she tried to use previous branding and get things to fit right, things just weren’t falling into place. She knew that, in order to unlock the next stage of the business, the branding needed an overhaul. For her, she had a creative block that she just knew wasn’t going to lift until big changes were made. That sense of inspiration was missing and it was causing a hitch in all of her marketing.
As a written processor, she knew that she didn’t want to be spending a ton of time tweaking visuals. At this point, we decided to move forward with a photo shoot to really hone the visuals. At the end of the day, simply posting a photo and including value in the caption often garners more engagement than a carousel would anyway!
And Vix actually did something that I’m now suggesting to my own clients – batch posting. She took about 30 pieces of content and posted them all at once to her feed. From this, she’s landed new email subscribers, sign ups for a masterclass, and more. Here’s why she said she went with this strategy:
“I am, like I said, a human design generator. I’m very much an impulsive, experimental, go of type person. And I hate feeling stuck and I hate feeling uninspired because I’m a very inspired person. I am very creative in all those ways. And I remember, Like I said, I’ve got a newborn baby.
I haven’t really been sleeping that much. And I had this time where she was in a nap. And I’d had some templates because I was in the Design on Demand retainer. I had these 10 templates and I was just like, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s it.’ I think I spent about two hours just filling these 10 templates of everything I wanted to say. And then I was like, ‘can I have some more please?’ So some more came through, and I was even more inspired after that!
So one day, I had about 30 templates ready to go. Everything that I wanted to say about my area of expertise, my offers, my unique opinions, my unique process and frameworks all put into these beautiful templates. And I don’t want to sit here now and schedule one a day for the next month.
I want to post them all right now. And because I’m always very much an F around and find out type person, I just said ‘let’s do it.’ So that’s the thing, it just unlocked that creativity, because finally I could find a way of putting my words into these beautiful designed graphics, and it just flowed out.”
This is such a good example of the fact that you don’t have to stop selling or marketing while you’re going through the rebrand! You can take advantage of these offers to experiment with new things and be creative.
As a postpartum mom, Vix was not on fire about the idea of getting in front of a camera for a professional photoshoot. She even thought she might want to postpone the shoot! But since we were doing it all at once, there were certain creative things we did to make sure that all the angles and shots were comfortable for her. But beyond body image, Vix felt like she didn’t even know what her personal styles was anymore. She felt unsure about her best angles, how she might like to wear her hair, etc.
Having a bit of an identity crisis at the same time as a rebrand can be tricky, right? With a rebrand, you need so much clarity. She self-coached her way through it, telling herself she could either delay the shoot or she could lean all the way in. She asked herself, “what if this is the perfect time to really discover who I am? What is the brand that I want to put out there? How do I want people to perceive me?” She had fun with it, not take herself so seriously. She started to see her rebrand like the perfect time to really discover who she really is.
Vix had a skill-swap session with her friend Emily from Pass the Queso (a humorous copywriter) for the messaging of the program Vix was about to launch. During that call, her friend asked her “what things do you love?” And Vix’s answers were all very nostalgic. All of her favorite bands were pre-2000s, her favorite movies are all from the 90s.
Later in the conversation, she started talking about the signature framework used in her offer – “rave, refer, retain.” The framework provides a structure around what it actually takes to get people raving about your offers to everyone they know. Suddenly it hit her: a rave! She started seeing Adidas tracksuits, Spice Girls, neons, hats, acid smiley faces, friendship bracelets, all the 90s iconography.
From there, she decided she wanted to create a world in her program where you are putting yourself in the DJ booth at the rave of your 100 happy clients. And they are all there raving because your set is the most amazing thing they’ve seen and heard. So that’s how they came up with the messaging for that specific offer.
From there, our team came in to bring the brand of the program to life. From the logo to the social posts, 90s iconography and bold colors are used throughout. And really, with this way of building off of a theme, her presence feels like an actual world you can land in instead of simple aesthetics.
Before, Vix honestly felt like her branding was limiting her. Now, she feels like she’s coming to all of her offers and her marketing with a fresh set of eyes. Instead of feeling bogged down by whatever tweaks need to be made to visuals, she has an experimental and fun approach that’s leaving her more excited than ever to put her work out there.
Vix’s rebrand wasn’t live when we recorded this, but now it is! You can go check it out at her website and see all of these elements come into play. Before, Vix had reached a cap on her marketing and she didn’t feel inspired anytime she sat down to create content. Now, she’s crystal clear on her vision and this directly translates to an enhanced experience for her buyers!
